The Secret to a Successful New Year's Resolution

Today I want to share with you the secret to making a new year's resolution.

Growing up I had a lot of bad habits that I (mostly) conquered as I got older through life experience and persistent parenting. Let me give you a few examples.

I used to chew on my shirt collars until a ridiculously old age. This destroyed the shirts and left them with a constant wet spot. It was gross. My dad had to repeatedly remind me to stop. I put a rubber band on my wrist and popped my wrist every time I caught myself. Eventually, it worked, and I quit!

I used to constantly touch my face and rub my nose, for no reason at all. I just couldn't keep my hands off my face. Until I started volunteering for my church's clown ministry (That's a whole other story that I won't get into). You can't touch makeup without consequences, and that broke me from touching my face.

I used to doodle all over my notes and school papers, and I don't mean just up through middle school. I was doing this well into college. I eventually stopped when my college professor set up a special meeting with me. She asked how old I was, and I responded, "Twenty." She showed me a quiz I turned in with about thirty doodles all at the top and said, "You're too old to be doing this. It's not professional." That shamed me enough to make me stop doodling on anything people see (But she didn't stop me from doodling on my personal notes!).

We all have bad habits in our lives. Some of those have probably been pretty harmless, but perhaps others have been harmful. Bad habits can shape our life in harmful ways. But in the same way, good habits can shape our lives in beneficial ways!

I will go as far as to say your spiritual habits have immense power over your life with God. No, good habits can't save you, and bad habits won't necessarily send you to hell. But your spiritual habits will determine the deepness of your life with Christ.

So back to how I started this blog. The secret to making a resolution is not to make one at all. Start a new habit and watch it change your life. Habits eat resolutions for breakfast.

In our new series we're going to explore five habits of holiness that will revolutionize your walk with God. It all starts tomorrow! I pray you will consider worshiping with us.
