When you are about to go through big changes, it’s nice to have an idea of what those changes will be. While most of life’s big changes are surprises, some are regular enough that people write books about them. Let me give you a few examples.
I’m not sure how your parents handled it, but when I was entering my puberty years, my parents sat me down and had the talk. We talked about all the regular "talk" things and the changes that I was going to experience over the next few years. Then, they gave me a book that was very helpful... and descriptive. As awkward as it was, I was never surprised by the big changes happening to me.
When Allie first became pregnant, we were given a lot of books about pregnancy and infant development. Including one of the most famous: What to Expect When You’re Expecting. We learned so much about all the changes she was going through and how our little baby was developing.
If you don’t know, our son Levi has Down syndrome. When Levi was born, we knew a lot of changes were coming. At the time, I did not know much about Down syndrome at all, but the book we read was very helpful, and it calmed a lot of our anxieties.
In our new series, “The Unhurried Faith” I'm going to help us understand what growth in the Christian life looks like. There are a lot of changes that happen right after we surrender to Christ, and then they continue through the rest of our lives. It would be really helpful if we had “What to Expect When You Become a Christian,” and that’s essentially what this new series is about.
In the first message, I’ll lay out the stages of growth in the Christian life and what to expect in each stage. Then in the following weeks, we're going to talk about the healthy practices for growing in your faith. You might call these practices your nutrition plan for spiritual growth.
We will open up the Scriptures, I'll bring what I’ve learned in my personal walk, plus a lot of good information I’ve gleaned from studying the topic. Start 2025 off on the right foot by worshiping with us this Sunday!
