Have you ever heard the saying, “The pen is mightier than the sword”? It’s an interesting statement that means words are more powerful than violence. Sure, someone can be forced into action through violence, but violence can’t change their heart or mind. Words, on the other hand, spoken at the right time and in the right way can transform both what a person thinks and how they live.
Words are powerful. We sometimes try to downplay their power by saying, “They’re just words. I didn’t mean it.” As kids, we pushed back against hurtful words with, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” But deep down, we knew that wasn’t true. We’ve all felt the power of words, and we know how deeply they can wound.
Proverbs teaches that our words have the power to bring life or death. Literally, the right word at the right moment can bring life, while the wrong word at the wrong time can cause a person to end their lives.
On Sunday, we’ll dig into the wisdom of Proverbs and learn about the power of our words. We’ll see how we can use them for the good of others, ourselves, and ultimately, for the glory of God. I hope you’ll join us for worship!
