If you’ve been around Arborway for any amount of time, you've probably realized that my wonderful wife is an amazing cook. There is no meal that we eat at the church that she does not contribute to. You may think that you’ve never tasted Allie’s food, but if you have attended on a Sunday morning, you probably have. Did you know that she wakes up at 6 AM and makes the donuts for church? And get this, she makes them from scratch.
If you have one of her meals and think, “Does she cook like this at home?” The answer is yes, yes, she does. I am a blessed man.
The next question I’m asked is, “How do you stay thin?” I don’t know. Portion control, exercise, and good genes are the best I have. I assume one day it will catch up with me.
Most of us love good food. Let’s be honest, most of us love pretty good food. We are a blessed nation; we Americans rarely miss a meal. So, the idea of purposely not eating is strange to us. Especially if we aren’t trying to lose weight. But did you know that not eating, i.e. fasting, is a regular part of every religious tradition including Christianity? So why don’t Christians fast more? Truly, in the West, fasting has become one of the rarest and most misunderstood practices of the faith.
This week I’m going to break down the practice of fasting. We will learn what it is, what it’s for, and how to do it. If you’ve ever been curious about fasting and how God can use it in your life, I encourage you to join us tomorrow for worship. We’ll have donuts and coffee!
