“Greed, for lack of a better term, is good.” That’s how Gordon Gekko, the iconic character from the Academy Award-winning film Wall Street, confidently sums up his philosophy. Funny enough, it also happens to sum up game nights at my house growing up.
If you walked into a game night at the Rhodes home, you’d probably find us playing Monopoly. I know it’s not everyone’s favorite, but we loved it. In Monopoly, the goal is simple: get as rich as possible by any means necessary. The rules? Well, they’re more like suggestions. We bent, stretched, and sometimes outright ignored them. To win you had to bankrupt everyone else and own everything. This required you to be greedy and ruthless. In Monopoly, nice people finished last. Plenty of game nights ended in maniacal laughing by the winner, and tears by the losers. Sounds like a blast, right?!
It’s easy to dismiss Gekko’s words, but if we’re honest, the world often rewards greed. The people who take the most seem to win the most. It can feel like greed is the way of the world. Want to get ahead? Be greedy. The most cutthroat and ruthless people always seem to come out on top… or at least that’s how it seems.
And if you’re paying attention to the real world, greed leaves a trail of pain and suffering. The rich get richer. The poor get poorer. Sure, greed might benefit a few, but it’s disastrous for the world. So, what’s the answer to greed?
The Bible offers a surprising antidote. One that brings life instead of pain. What if real wealth isn’t about having more? Join us this Sunday as we explore Scripture’s ancient wisdom on defeating greed and discovering true wealth.
