Journey to the Center of the Earth

A few years ago, our family went on vacation to the Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. At over 400 miles, it holds the record for the longest cave system in the world, and that is just the discovered portion. There may yet be hundreds of miles no human has laid eyes on.

It may surprise you that we did not walk all 400+ miles, but we did take a few fantastic tours through some spectacular caves. While some caves were self-tours, one of them required a guide. We followed an impressively knowledgeable guide deeper into the earth than I had ever imagined I would go. We went so deep, in fact, that as we descended, I wondered if we would ever reach the bottom.

During our couple of hours in the cave, we would stop at various sites and listen to our guide explain the science and history behind each. We saw beautiful underground waterfalls stretching far above our heads and falling into holes fathoms below us, subterranean ponds full of blind fish, and multi-colored stalactites and stalagmites liberally distributed like the teeth of the Exogorth (Star Wars deep cut). It was a whole new aspect of God’s creation I had never experienced. 10/10. Would recommend.

Tomorrow we are going to meet a group of temple servants that will take us on a journey through history—from creation to Nehemiah’s present day. They will stop to enjoy the view at points, and at other places, they will mourn. In it all, our guides through Israel's history will show us that God was working for his people’s joy and his glory… even when they were actively working against him.

Their journey will give us three wonderful perspectives on God. They will be like 3 vast caverns, each deeper and more beautiful than the last. I believe that in better understanding who God is and how he has worked, we will be able to trust him more.
