As a child, Indiana Jones was one of my favorites. We had a CD with the theme song of several classic 80s movies, but the Indiana Jones theme was the one I had on repeat. Sing it with me: Bum, bum-bum, bum, bum, bum-bum, bum, bum, bum-bum-bum, bum, bum-bum, bum, bum. I'd put on a hat and pretend to be, Indiana Jones, the great explorer and archeologist. Every Easter, we didn't do an Easter egg hunt, we did something cooler. In the spirit of Indiana Jones, we did a "Treasure Hunt." My dad would create a course with obstacles and traps that we had to traverse. One time, he even recreated the boulder chase from Raiders of the Lost Ark!
What I loved about the Indiana Jones movies was the search and adventure. In the third and final movie (There are only three. Don't question me.), Indie's father is lost. One day Indie receives his father's old cryptic archeology journal. Inside are drawings and clues. Understanding it is the key to finding his dad. So, he sets out to translate, decipher, and solve clues in his father's old journal that will lead him to his dad, fight Nazis, overcome great obstacles, and eventually, the Holy Grail... literally. In the movie, the Holy Grail is the cup Jesus used at the last supper, and anyone who drinks out of it receives eternal life.
Indie turns out to be uniquely equipped for this adventure. His skills of deduction and interpretation allow him to understand the clues and find the treasure when no one else could.
Tomorrow we turn to Nehemiah 8 where God's people rediscover an ancient relic. What is this relic? It is a scroll of the first five books of the Bible. After hundreds of years of separation from the scroll, its words have become hard to understand. The people's language has shifted too much. Yet, God has uniquely equipped Ezra and a team of teachers to decipher and interpret the scroll so the people can discover the treasure within.
This is genuinely one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. Is it because I'm a preacher and this has to do with teaching the Scriptures? Yes. But I think you're going to love it too. Join us for worship tomorrow and discover beautiful treasures from God's Word.
