Luv is a Verb

One of my favorite songs as a kid in the early 90s' was the classic Christian hip-hop-pop track by DC Talk, "Luv is a verb." This was the original song about love being an action. It was released some twenty years before John Mayer's. In my humble opinion, it's better too, but I'm probably blinded by nostalgia. Watch it below and you be the judge.
Ok, admittedly, it's a little cringy, but on the plus side, Gen-Zs embracing of 90s' style mutes what would have seemed like painful fashion choices just a few years ago.

But I don't want to focus on fashion, I want to focus on their lyrics. In the song, Toby, the lead singer, opens a dictionary to the word "Love." He is surprised to realize that love is not a thing but an action. The lyrics go on to say...
Words come easy but don't mean much
When the words they're sayin' you can't put trust in
We're talkin' 'bout love in a different light
And if we all learn to love it will be just right

Hey, tell me, haven't you heard?
"Love" is a serious word
Hey, I think it's time you learned
I don't care what you say, I don't care what you heard
The word "love," "love" is a verb
Toby did not just reveal some new information. This song was written out of years of reading the Scriptures, and he was probably reading 1 John. I think this because later in the song he proves that love is a verb by looking toward Christ and his sacrifice on the cross. This is the exact move that John did almost 2000 years earlier and the passage we are focusing on tomorrow.

God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his one and only Son into the world so that we might live through him. Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10

Tomorrow, Professor John shows us that our love for others says a lot about the condition of our faith. I hope you will join us in this final message in our series That You May Know.
