The Roast of Jonah Son of Amittai

In high school, it wasn't unusual for two people to get into a verbal altercation. If someone had a quick and particularly pointed comeback we would say, "Oh, you just got roasted!!" This idea of being roasted was birthed out what is known as a "Roast."

Have you ever watched a roast before? Some famous celebrities have been roasted: William Shatner, David Hasselhoff, Donald Trump, Justin Bieber, and even New England's favorite athlete, Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. In a roast comedians walk on stage and throw haymakers at the roastee. Nothing is off-limits. Some of it is funny but most of it goes way too far.

If you've been paying attention to this series, it's no secret that Jonah isn't the ideal prophet. He's extremely flawed and barely obedient. Tomorrow we will see God take the mic and roast Jonah Son of Amittai. Now, God's roast will not be mean-spirited... or even funny. But it will be absolutely truthful and will definitely sting. Hearing how God roasts Jonah will help us learn to forgive the people we find hardest to forgive. I know studying this passage has been very beneficial for me, and I hope it will be for you too.

I can't wait to worship with you tomorrow!
