I’m not sure what you did in the first half of June, but I definitely know what I did. Our whole family was glued to the TV watching the Celtics destroy the Dallas Mavericks in five games. Every game (except for game four) was a blast to watch. Watching Tatum, Brown, and Pritchard shred the Mavericks was a joy I didn’t know I needed. Luka and company really had no chance.
On the night when they won our whole house jumped up and down and shouted. After several years of almost winning, it felt so good to finally win the championship. I can only imagine how the players felt.
The next event on the agenda was the parade. After the win, I immediately got online to check when the parade was happening. I went out and purchased Celtics shirts and we planned our week around attending the celebration.
When we got there it was a sea of humanity. Estimates say more than a million people attended the parade. And it was just as fantastic as you would imagine. It was awesome to see the guys we had been watching on TV in the flesh. Jason Tatum was only a few yards from me. I think Hauser looked at me when I shouted his name (maybe). We screamed, sang, took pictures, and videos, and soaked the whole thing in. It was a moment to remember and celebrate.
While it was incredibly fun, at least for me, the Celtics parade was not worship, but I’m sure for many it was as close to worship as they’ll ever get. There is a part of me that understands. Whether you’re a Celtics fan or not, we all have a desire to be a part of and celebrate something bigger than ourselves. It’s human nature to celebrate greatness.
While the Celtics' championship brought us joy, it reminded me of an even greater celebration. A victory that transcends championships—a victory that gives life and hope to all who believe.
What stirs your heart to celebration? Join us for worship this week as we experience and celebrate the joy that’s found in Jesus, the joy that never ends. A joy so great, that even comparing him to the Celtics makes me chuckle. Tomorrow’s message has singing, shouting, and celebration. Worship with us as we celebrate Jesus, the greatest of all.
