Not many people know that I was an art minor in college, with an emphasis in graphite (Pencil drawings). I was always pretty good at drawing and art was an easy A for a little GPA boost.
While my emphasis was in graphite, my art minor required me to work with many mediums: Oils, clay, ink, prints, color pastels, graphite, charcoal, watercolors, and more. I learned that proficiency in one medium did not directly translate to another. While I may have had the skills to draw a landscape, adding color brought about a whole new set of problems. But it wasn't just color theory that could mess me up.
I learned that the real art was in understanding the medium. Each medium had its own feel and set of techniques. So, to get the desired product, each medium had to be used differently. The most impressive pieces were always done by the students who learned the strengths and weaknesses of a medium and created with those in mind.
Our new series is called "The Art of Neighboring." In this series, we are learning how to love our neighbors well. What we will see is that neighboring is less of a calculation and more of an art. You might think of your block as your canvas and your relationships as your medium. In this week's message, I will help you discover the first technique in the art of neighboring. You will be shocked by how easy and overlooked this simple technique is.
We are trying something different with the Art of Neighboring. All our Community Groups will be following along. So, what you hear on Sundays will be discussed and unpacked in your weekly group. Go ahead and order your book if you haven't already. I'm looking forward to learning the art of neighboring with you!
