We have entered the best season: Football season. You thought I was going to say fall, didn't you? Although statistically speaking, fall is America's favorite season, the correct answer is football season.
I know a lot of you don't care about football, and a few of you don't care much about sports at all. But you can't tell me that if you have someone you really care about competing in an event, be it track and field, soccer, hockey, gymnastics, or even debate, you aren't rooting for them to win. Because competition, I don't care what you've heard, is not about fun or teamwork. The point is to win. Fun and teamwork are secondary. In fact, you owe it to the opposing team to give your best and try to win... otherwise, it's not true competition.
I have passed the average age of retirement in the NBA and am officially past my athletic prime. Yet, I still enjoy watching others compete. There is something about watching some of the most gifted people compete and perform at the peak of human ability toward one goal... one mission. To win.
There is an idea in Football that sometimes you lose because you deserve it, and sometimes you lose because you beat yourself. This usually means a team wasn't working very well together. Perhaps they weren't gelling. Maybe there are people on the team who are self-interested. Sometimes it means they're distracted. If coached poorly, teams may be confused about what their mission on the field is.
Vince Lombardi, one of the greatest football coaches of all time, used to begin every season with the basics. The foundation. The mission. He'd hold up a football and say, "Gentlemen, this is a football!” While that seems a little absurd to tell professional football players, he wanted to keep the main thing the main thing.
This Sunday, I'm going to hold of the proverbial football and start with the basics. We'll look at one of the main reasons Arborway Community Church exists. God has given us a sacrificial mission to our neighborhood, city, and the world. I hope you'll join us this week at 10 AM and be a part of something extraordinary that God is doing in Jamaica Plain.
