Did you ever build a model rocket in science class? In our house, we didn't just build them for school, we built them for fun. Growing up, it was easily a top-five family activity for me.
We would purchase a kit from a local hobby store, glue it, snap it, build it, sand it, paint it, stuff it, and decal it. Then came the most important piece: The rocket engine. If you have ever built one before and had to purchase an engine, you know there are different sizes and strengths. If you get an engine too powerful you will launch your rocket into low earth orbit, never to be seen again... or create a missile. There is no way to know which until launch. Get an underpowered engine and your rocket may not make it off the launch pad. You must get the right engine.
A successful launch is a beautiful thing. If you match your rocket with the right engine, that solid propellant-powered javelin will soar!
There are few things more satisfying than watching your rocket reach its zenith and seemingly float in the heavens until it begins its descent back to earth. If every thing goes according to plan the parachute deploys, and you run to the estimated landing spot hoping to catch it for extra cool points. Then you run back to mission control, pop another engine in, and do it all again.
God has chosen the church as the right engine to launch the gospel into the world. Without the church, the good news of Christ does not reach those who need to hear. And when a gathering of believers, the church, realizes its purpose in God's mission it is a beautiful thing because people find peace, hope, love, and salvation in the arms of their savior.
This week we will see how God designed Arborway to propel the gospel into Jamaica Plain. This is not only a job for pastors, church employees, or volunteers. Every follower of Christ has a part in propelling the gospel.
Worship with us tomorrow as we look at our shared exciting and meaningful mission.
